Blizzard’s online world is the one I personally played the most, but any MMORPG will do here. You basically send a poke towards the other player at your own leisure, and it has a built-in chat function if you ever feel the need to connect more deeply. Pick it up whenever you have the time, and put it away again if you’re busy. While it is not so great for hanging out together for a prolonged time, it shines at opportunities for intermittent contact. Word Feud is Scrabble for your smartphone. Another board game that has been made digital, but it deserves its own mention. The multiplayer variant Don’t Starve Together pits you and your friends against a harsh world, where you can choose to survive together or each go your own way. – A game aptly named for many people’s first challenge when going to college. I have highlighted some of my personal favorites, but of course there is no accounting for taste.ĭid we miss your favorite online game? Feel free to share in the comments below!ĭon’t Starve. The list below is a compilation of games that we think are especially engaging for friends to play together online, in alphabetical order. When discussing this topic here at the GEMH lab, dozens of examples were shared in the group. There are innumerable games that offer a fun and quick social activity for friends, without traveling halfway across the country. Based on the popularity of online video games, I am surely not alone in this. However, through a shared activity such as gaming, I stayed connected with friends all across the country. I was never one to directly call people, or poke them on social media to ‘just talk’. When I went to college, one of the main ways to stay in touch with my friends was through online video games. Luckily, just because you can’t hang out anymore does not mean that friendships are over. And as Maaike wrote in a previous blog post, loneliness in students is actually quite high. Even though college life is full of social opportunities, there will surely be times when you miss your old pals. As exciting as it is to ‘leave the nest’, it also means that it becomes harder to meet up with friends and family that have been with you for years. Many people go their separate ways as they move to different towns for college. One of the biggest transitions in life is the moment when you finish high school and spread your wings in the big world. ![]()

![]() ![]() Only 42 percent of FEMA’s maps “adequately identified the level of flood risk”, according to fiscal year 2017 data included in the report. A recent report from the Department of Homeland Security’s Inspector General’s Office found that FEMA’s flood map program is plagued by mismanagement and poor mapping standards. “FEMA encourages everyone to consider buying flood insurance and making mitigation-related changes to reduce their risk and protect their properties.”īut FEMA knows there’s a problem. “The recent storms were strong evidence of the fact that anywhere it can rain, it can flood,” a FEMA spokesperson said. Areas are Census boundaries and Special Land Use Authority Areas from 2010 provided by FEMA.įEMA says these maps only paint part of the risk picture. In some instances, areas that do participate are not shown due to lack of reliable data. Note: Areas without data are communities that do not participate in the National Flood Insurance Program. Age of effective date for FEMA flood maps Almost two-thirds of those maps have an “effective date”-the date it was last officially updated-more than five years old some maps have been in place for more than 40 years. “Until they do that, these maps will always be obsolete the day they come out,” said Larry Larson, senior policy adviser and director emeritus for the Association of State Floodplain Managers, a professional organization focused on reducing losses from flood damage.įEMA manages flood maps for about 22,000 communities across the U.S. And it can lead to billions of dollars in losses for uninsured homeowners who didn’t think their house could flood.Įven FEMA’s newer maps are likely to fall short as an accurate indicator of flood risk because they don’t account for rapid rain accumulation, how buildings are constructed, climate change or expected population growth, among other things. When those maps are wrong it leaves taxpayers on the hook if residents, banks or the National Flood Insurance Program need to be bailed out. But that policy hasn’t stopped flood maps created as far back as the 1970s from influencing where people build or if they have flood insurance, and at what rates. FEMA is supposed to review their maps every five years to make sure they still properly indicate flood risk. ![]() That made it harder for residents to know if their homes were at risk of flooding-which might explain why fewer than one in four homes had flood insurance in a town that saw severe flooding during the storm. The town of 7,300, just across the bay from Galveston, was also the victim of a bad map: The local flood maps managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency hadn’t been updated since 1983. In this case, the two deck boards, 5 ½” + 5 ½” + ¼” for spacing = 11 ¼”. If the dimensions of the treads were designed by taking away all the measurements of the nosing and riser thickness, then the treads will go on first. The stair stringer dimensions will dictate whether the treads get put on the stringers first or the risers get put on first. The decking on the treads need to be spaced ¼” apart in order to allow for expansion and contraction as well as to allow debris to easily pass through. ![]() Measure away from the deck frame 33 ¾” and mark that distance on the 2x4 clamped to the top of the frame. Three treads at 11 ¼” gives a total of 33 ¾” this is the distance the stairway will end away from the deck. In this example, there will be two pieces of 5 ½” decking on each tread, and the two pieces of decking will be spaced ¼” apart, which gives each tread a total depth of 11 ¼”. To determine how far away from the deck the stairway will end, the depth of the treads will need to be determined. The decking is 5 ½” so two pieces together will be 11”. This brings the total tread count to three. ![]() In this example, there are four rises, and there will be one less tread than rise (since one of the treads on the stairway will be the actual deck). ![]() Knowing the number of rises that are needed for the stairway will help determine the number of treads. ![]() ![]() As your child engages in physical activities, their body temperature rises, and they may begin to sweat, chafe or overheat. In fact, at higher altitudes, you could be exposed to twice as much UV rays than in the city. There are very few children in Australia, and probably worldwide, that enjoy having sunscreen slathered all over them, but some eye-rolls and a bit of laborious cajoling and whinging at the start of your day will save you tears at the end. That is why it is vital to know which steps best offer your kids skin protection on the snow. ![]() Sunburn and windburn can coexist too! While there may be debate about the actual cause of windburn, when it comes to the effects, the consensus is unanimous – it’s not fun! Windburn can take you from relishing in the splendour of your kids snowboarding to crying in the corner, wondering where it all went wrong. Others believe it is the result of exposure to strong winds and cold air. Some believe it to be the winter version of sunburn, as the sun rays pierce through the clouds or reflect off the ice and snow. Your skin may also peel because of the dryness. Windburn occurs when low temperatures damage the top layer of your skin and causes it to become red, dry, and sometimes itchy. ![]() |
